Emotions

Our emotions are our reactions to our thoughts of an event. The event has gone by but the thought remain. Our holding on to the thought and our perception of the event through our thoughts will colour our emotions. Go ahead, think of a past significant event in your life. You can see the emotions arising even though the event has passed by. That is our life. In every moment, our emotions are the result of reactions to events which have gone by, even if it was for a split second. That is why it is so important to be in the present because that is the only 'real' thing. But it is only real at that point in time, the present will also become the past. So our emotions will also come to pass. And so the wisdom in life is to watch your thoughts and be mindful of your reactions to your thoughts. Not the event. That is not the determinant to your emotions.
